This KB provides a walkthrough to basic settings to address screen or hard drive timeouts.
Occasionally, a PC may revert it's Power settings after an update or after an installation of new software.
Our company group policy typically addresses this with a company-wide setting, however local policies located on a PC will override our company group policy for the purpose of flexibility.
Therefore, you may need to adjust your own power settings.
Windows 10
1. On your Desktop right-click an empty space and select Display Settings
2. This will open the Settings window. Select 'Power & sleep'. Configure your desired settings.
3. To the right of the 'Power & sleep' settings, go to 'Additional power settings' under the 'Related settings' header.
4. This will take you to your Control Panel plan settings. In the image below, the default power plan is 'High performance'... regardless of your default power plan, click on 'Change plan settings'...
5. Confirm and configure your desired power settings.
6. Click on 'Change advanced power settings'...
7. Here you can scroll down and confirm/adjust your Display settings and your hard drive settings:
- Go to Display> Turn of display after...
Go to Hard disk> Turn off hard disk after...
Click OK/Apply to get back to your desktop and work.
Windows 7
For Windows 7, the process is similar... however quicker to get to the Power Settings:
1. Click on Start> Control Panel> Power Options.
NOTE: MAKE SURE 'Small icons' is the selection under 'View by:' at the top right hand corner.
Then you can follow the steps above beginning at Step 4.
